Buckingham Rolling Into Homecoming Matchup

Updated: Fri 12:02 AM, Oct 05, 2012

It's business as usual for Buckingham County.

The Knights once again find themselves near the top of the heap in the state at a perfect 5-0. They're currently ranked No. 5 in anticipation of their homecoming matchup with winless Randolph Henry.

After losing All-District quarterback Tarian Ayers to graduation, some around central Virginia thought Buckingham might be in for a rebuilding season.

But the Knights have rallied behind the 1-2 rushing attack of Kenneth Johnson and Kyree Koonce, perhaps the best rushing duo in the area.

Knights' coach Craig Gill says the key to the team's early success starts on the practice field.

"You win your games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday preparing for people and the kids have been real serious about preparing, working hard during the week and listening to coaches," Gill explained. "With the talent they've got and their work habits, it's been fun."

Senior linebacker Tariq Bartee is part of a stingy Knights defense that Gill calls the best he's ever had.

"Throughout the summer the whole team worked hard and we just came out together more as a team this year and we just try to keep everything on track this year so we don't fall apart."

While the state pollsters think highly of the Knights so far, Gill isn't concerned with his team's perceived reputation.

"I've told the team, games are played on grass, not paper. We don't care what is written or what is said in the media, all we can do is go out and focus on the next game at hand."
