Former Burley High School football coach Robert Smith is one of nine inductees in the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame Class of 2012.
The induction will be held Monday, October 15 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Charlottesville.
Smith led Charlottesville's Burley High School to four VIA state football championships. His teams at Burley compiled a 41-12-5 record, won five district titles, and won 28 straight contests from 1955-1958. The 1956 state champion team did not allow a single point all season.
Smith came to Charlottesville in 1945 as head football, basketball and baseball coach at Jefferson High before becoming athletic director and coach of all sports at Burley, which was constructed to serve the black students of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
Charlottesville's Smith Aquatic and Fitness Center was named in honor of Smith. A native of Paterson, New Jersey, he passed away on October 21, 1997.
