Cavalier Softball Splits Home-Opening Doubleheader

Blake Miller's home debut Saturday as new Virginia softball coach was a mixed bag.

The Cavaliers split a double-header with No. 9 Florida State in front of a packed home crowd at The Park in the Wahoos' home opener.

Marcy Bowdren's walk-off two-run home run gave the Cavs an 11-9 win in Game 1, while the Seminoles rebounded to blank the Hoos 8-0 in five innings in Game 2.

In the opener, Virginia trailed 8-2 in the sixth before a furious comeback gave them a one-run lead. Megan Harris, Bowdren, Heidi Velk and Madison Labshere all had RBIs before Katie Park's two-run double gave Virginia the lead.

After FSU responded with the tying run in the top half of the seventh, Bowdren sent a deep fly over the wall in right to give the Cavaliers the 11-9 walkoff win.

Jessica Burroughs pitched a complete-game one-hiiter in the Seminoles 8-0 win in Game 2.

Virginia (3-15, 1-4 ACC) visits Georgia Tech for a two-game set starting Wednesday.
