The 25th-ranked Virginia baseball team finished off a 3-game series sweep over Toledo Sunday at Davenport Field, winning 6-3 to improve to 7-0 on the year.
Virginia freshman Nathan Kirby pitched 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen to earn his first college win. UVa starter Nick Howard gave up four hits and a walk while pitching four scoreless innings.
The teams played three-and-a-half scoreless innings before UVa scored in the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Downes doubled to right-center and then advanced on a Joe McCarthy groundout> Downes scored when Kenny Towns grounded out to shortstop, his team-leading 15th RBI of the year.
The Rockets avoided a third shutout in a row, scoring on James Miglin's solo home run in the fifth, and adding two more runs in the seventh.
A three-run home run from Derek Fisher in the fifth put the Cavaliers up for good. Virginia added a pair of runs in the eighth without recording any hits. The first three batters walked on a total of 13 pitches. Reed Gragnani then lifted a sacrifice fly to left-center, and Nate Irving laid down a safety squeeze which hugged the first baseline to score another run.
The Cavaliers play host to George Washington Tuesday at 3 p.m.
