'Hoos Hang On For Win Over Richmond

After trailing by a goal at halftime, the No. 7 Virginia men's lacrosse team came back to beat Richmond 13-12 on Saturday, in the Spiders' first game as a Division-I lacrosse program.

The Cavaliers opened a 6-2 lead early, but Richmond scored seven-straight goals to take the lead. The Spiders led 9-8 at halftime, before the 'Hoos took the lead for good in the fourth quarter.

“We were a little sleepy early in the game and I would have liked to see us come out and be a little more alert,” said UVa head coach Dom Starsia. “Richmond, who was playing with a lot of enthusiasm, was able to come out and jump on a bunch of things."

Richmond started the second half scoring on an unassisted goal by Mitchell Goldberg to take a 10-8 lead. The Spiders didn't score again for the next 17:49 and UVa was able to retake a one-goal lead at 11-10. James Pannell scores twice in the 4th, and the 'Hoos held on for a 13-12 win.

Pannell led all scorers with four goals, as the Cavaliers improved to 2-0 on the season. The win also marked a milestone for Starsia, who won his 350th career game as a coach.

Virginia outshot the Spiders 46-24 and also held the advantage in ground balls at 43-31. Richmond made 14 saves in the cage to UVa’s five.
