In many ways, Monday's first day of preseason practice marked a new beginning for the Virginia football team.
And according to junior running back Kevin Parks, an off-season of changes led to plenty of excitement on Day 1.
"A lot of energy. A lot of guys running wild out here today on the first day," Parks said. "We need to maintain this throughout the whole camp. You have your lumps and bumps. But hopefully these guys, they know how to get the job done."
UVa didn't get the job done in 2012, following up the team's eight-win performance in 2011 with a disappointing 4-8 record.
"We're really excited, just to prove the haters wrong. And to just shock the world," said sophomore defensive end Eli Harold. "Just do what God blessed us to do, showcase our talents, and just prove to the world that we can do what we know we're capable of doing."
The Cavaliers began camp on Monday with new coordinators in all three phases of the game. Steve Fairchild is now the offensive coordinator; UVa alum Jon Tenuta is the defensive coordinator; and Larry Lewis coaches the special teams.
The three coordinators got the opportunity to work with their new players during a 15-practice crash course last spring. On Monday, Mike London hoped his team was able to retain most of what it learned in those sessions.
"We're going to see how far we are away from that last practice. The 15th practice," London said. "To see how much recall we have from that last practice. And then based on that, then we'll try to progress as much as we can."
"Because before you know it, BYU will be at Scott Stadium."
