The Virginia baseball team closed out their regular season home schedule with a 12-3 win over VCU on Tuesday night at Davenport Field.
UVa got off to a fast start and never trailed, after scoring four runs in the first inning. John LaPrise hit a two-run double and Joe McCarthy drove in a run as well. McCarthy later scored on a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0.
McCarthy helped the 'Hoos add another run in the second inning, driving in Mike Papi to extend the leave to 5-1. After VCU got on the board in the fifth, Kenny Towns double to left center and scored Joe McCarthy, to make it 6-1 after six innings.
The Cavaliers had another four-run inning in the seventh. Brandon Downes, Papi, and Daniel Pinero all drove in runs, giving UVa an 11-1 lead over the Rams through seven innings of play. The 'Hoos scored once again in the eighth, and VCU added two in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring.
UVa starting pitcher Alec Bettinger pitched five innings to earn the win, giving up a run, six hits and no walks while striking out a pair. Bettinger improved to 6-0 in midweek action this year.
With the win, UVa improved to 42-9 on the season and finishes the regular season with a 29-3 home record. The Cavaliers finish the regular season Thursday through Saturday with a three-game ACC series at Wake Forest.
