The Virginia men's soccer team kicked off the 2014 season with a 1-0 overtime win on Friday at Klöckner Stadium.
The Cavaliers and Monarchs played 90 scoreless minutes before heading into extra time. Just two minutes into OT, Ryan Zinkhan scored on a pass from Eric Bird to seal the win for UVa.
“That was a good, hard-fought win for us tonight,” said head coach George Gelnovatch. “Give Old Dominion credit. They played well tonight. I thought we were able to wear them down midway through the second half and we created a lot of chances down the stretch. It’s a good way to start our season and gives us something to build on going into two challenging games next weekend.”
UVa out-shot Old Dominion 20-9 in the game, including a 15-5 advantage in the second half and extra time. Freshman Jeff Caldwell recorded a clean sheet and finished with a pair of saves in his first college game in goal. Old Dominion keeper Alex Tiesenhausen had 10 saves in the loss.
Next up, the 'Hoos head on the road to Tulsa to compete in the Golden Hurricane’s tournament. UVa faces Tulsa on Sept. 5 at 8:30 p.m. ET and takes on UAB on Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. ET.
