The Virginia field hockey team earned an at-large bid into the 2012 NCAA Tournament, and will host Iowa in the first round Saturday.
Virginia will serve as one of four host sites for the first two rounds of the tournament. Princeton, the No. 2 seed in the field, will take on Drexel on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 11:30 a.m. The Cavaliers will host Iowa on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winners will advance to the second round game on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
“We are very excited to be able to play at home,” said head coach Michele Madison. “I’ve been in this game long enough not to expect anything. The committee has to do their best job with the pairings under the parameters of regionality, travel constraints, and other factors. I think they did a very good job of balancing it out. We are excited to be here in Charlottesville and look forward to taking on a very talented Iowa team.”
This is the 18th trip to NCAA Tournament for the Cavaliers and their sixth in head coach Michele Madison's seven seasons at Virginia.
North Carolina, Penn State, and Connecticut will serve as the other three host sites for the first and second round games. The winner of each site will advance to the NCAA semifinals on Nov. 16 at Powhatan SportsComplex at Old Dominion University. The National Championship game will take place on Nov. 18 at Old Dominion.
