Cavs Get At-Large Bid to NCAA Tournament

The Virginia field hockey team earned an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers will face Massachusetts in a first-round game on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at Duke’s Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The winner will advance to a quarterfinal matchup on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m., taking on the winner of Duke and New Hampshire.

"This is the goal that you set from January 1 and work towards all year," said head coach Michele Madison. "It is really exciting to have our team’s hard work and efforts pay off and end up in the situation we are in."

All seven ACC teams made the tournament with Maryland, Syracuse, North Carolina and Duke earning the top-four seeds and the right to host the first and second round games.

“I am very happy that all of the ACC teams were rewarded for being the premiere conference in the nation,” Madison said. “Everyone of those teams deserved to be in the tournament and it is really exciting for all of us.”

The winner of each of the four sites will advance to the NCAA semifinals on Nov. 22 at Powhatan Sports Complex at Old Dominion University. The National Championship game will take place on Nov. 24 at Old Dominion.

This is the 19th trip to NCAA Tournament for the Cavaliers and their seventh in head coach Michele Madison's eight seasons at Virginia. Last year, Virginia advanced to the quarterfinals before falling, 5-2, to eventual-national champion Princeton.
