Cavs Get Confidence Boost With Win Over American

The Virginia women’s lacrosse team finished up a two-game homestand with a dominant 18-4 win over American on Tuesday at Klöckner Stadium. With the win, the Cavaliers are now 6-6 overall and have won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

"It was important to just break even again and hopefully score a bunch of goals while we limit them to just a few," head coach Julie Myers said. "I think we got exactly what we needed out of today, as we're about to head out to Notre Dame, an opponent we've never played against. We've never been out there, so it's kind of exciting to do a new prep, even though it is in the ACC. It's kind of the beginning of the next step."

The 'Hoos held the Eagles scoreless through the first 21 minutes of the game, as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead. After leading 11-1 at the break, UVa continued its strong play on both offense and defense in the second half on the way to the win.

"I think we just needed these games to show ourselves we are a strong team, we can compete," said junior attacker Casey Bocklet. "It was definitely a confidence boost that we needed going into the end stretch of the season."

Eleven different Cavaliers scored in the game including freshman Besser Dyson, who scored the first two goals of her collegiate career, and sophomore Brooke Boyd, who also scored her first collegiate goal. Junior Courtney Swan led UVa in goals, posting her eighth hat trick of the season while also winning four draw controls. Bocklet finished with a goal with three assists.

UVa will be looking for its first ACC win of the season on Saturday when they play at Notre Dame in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Opening draw is at 3 p.m.
