Cavs Move to 2-0 in CWS After Extra Innings Win Over TCU

For the second time in two College World Series games, the Virginia baseball team earned a walkoff win. In a 15-inning marathon against TCU, the 'Hoos outlasted the Horned Frogs for a 3-2 win on Tuesday night at TD Ameritrade Park.

In the bottom of the 15th, Daniel Pinero executed a sacrifice fly, scoring Thomas Woodruff from third to seal the victory for UVa. Woodruff was pinch-running for Nate Irving, who led off the 15th with a double.

UVa starting pitcher Brandon Waddell worked seven innings, giving up six hits and two runs. Nick Howard, Whit Mayberry, and Artie Lewicki combined to throw eight innings of scoreless relief. TCU starting pitcher Brandon Finnegan went eight innings, giving up nine hits but just one earned run.

Branden Cogswell went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. The only other Cavalier with a multiple-hit game was Irving, who finished 2-for-6.

The Cavaliers struck first after Branden Cogswell led off the bottom of the first inning with a double. Cogswell later scored on a Daniel Pinero flyout and an error by TCU to make it 1-0.

The Horned Frogs responded in the second inning with three straight hits to start. With two runners on, Dylan Fitzgerald singled to left field, scoring Garrett Crain and tying the game at 1-1. Cody Jones later reached on an error by Pinero, scoring Jerrick Suiter and giving the Horned Frogs a 2-1 lead.

UVa tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth after another leadoff double by Cogswell. After advancing to third on a bunt by Pinero, Cogswell scored on an RBI groundout by Mike Papi to knot the game at 2-2. The scored remained the same for 10 innings before Pinero's RBI that gave UVa the win.

The Cavaliers move to 2-0 in the College World Series and will not play again until Friday, when they will meet the winner of Thursday's matchup between Ole Miss and TCU.
