Cavs' Papi Signs With Cleveland

Mike Papi is the latest star of the Virginia baseball's national runner-up team to embark on a pro career.

Papi announced Thursday on Twitter that he has signed a pro contract with the Cleveland Indians, the team that took the junior with the 38th overall pick in last month's MLB draft.

Papi was the third of six UVa juniors to be drafted by MLB teams last month, and the last of those six to sign. Senior pitchers Artie Lewicki and Whit Mayberry were also drafted, both by the Detroit Tigers.

Papi was one of three players to appear in all 69 games for UVa this season. His .307 batting average led the Cavaliers, while his 11 home runs were tied for the most in the ACC, and his 56 RBI led the conference. Papi also broke the UVa single-season record with 61 walks, and his .451 on-base percentage was third in the ACC.

Papi was named to the All-ACC first team this past season at first base, after making the first team as an outfielder in 2013. Papi led the league in hitting with a .381 average as a sophomore.
