Cavs Still Find Recruiting Success Despite On-Field Struggles

As the losses mount on the field for the Virginia football team, Mike London continues to pile up wins on the recruiting front.

"That's been amazing," London said Thursday about his program's continued success in recruiting, despite clinching a second consecutive losing season with last Saturday's loss at home to Clemson.

The Cavaliers' latest recruiting victory came Thursday, when Altavista High School athlete Juan Thornhill became the first player to commit to UVa's class of 2015.

UVa currently has 11 prep seniors committed to its recruiting class of 2014, highlighted by a pair of five-star defensive players -- defensive tackle Andrew Brown from Oscar Smith, and safety Quin Blanding of Bayside.

Blanding was the first player to commit to the Cavaliers' class of 2014, back in late February. Brown announced his decision in late June. And both players have held true to those commitments, despite UVa's current 2-7 record.

London says the message to recruits has remained consistent, selling the value of a UVa education, combined with the opportunity to be a part of the future of the football program.

"It's important when you have young men say, "You know what? I've said yes to you before, and I'm still saying yes because I believe that I'm the one that can make the difference when I come,"" London said Thursday.

The list of UVa commits also includes highly regarded California athlete Jeffery Farrar, who announced his decision in August, and four-star offensive linemen Steven Moss and Will Richardson, who both committed well before the 2013 season kicked off.

"It's been very positive in that respect, as far as what's happening off the field," London said. "Which will change the on-the-field results as well."
