It was closer than the Virginia faithful would like but the Cavaliers are 1-0 in Charlottesville Regional play after edging out Army 2-1 on a beautiful Friday at Davenport Field.
The Wahoos broke a 1-1 deadlock in the fifth when Joe McCarthy singled in Nate Irving with the go-ahead run. The Cavs held on from there to take the opener.
McCarthy led the way at the dish with a three-hit day in his first NCAA Regional. Irving and Kenny Towns also had a pair of hits.
Virginia starter Brandon Waddell pitched seven strong innings to pick up the win. He allowed just the one earned run with eight strikeouts and no walks. Senior Kyle Crockett then came on for a two-inning save with four punchouts.
The Black Knights took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on a perfectly executed squeeze play but the Cavs answered in the home half.
Towns led off with a double and scored on a Mike Papi single to tie the game. After Jared King walked to load the bases, McCarthy delivered the go-ahead base hit.
Virginia advances to face the winner of the Elon/UNC-Wilmington game Saturday at 6 p.m.
