UVa Football Announces Plans to Honor Dr. Frank McCue III

The Virginia athletics department announced today it will honor the late Dr. Frank C. McCue III in several ways this season.

Prior to the start of the season-opening Richmond game on Saturday, Sept. 1, a moment of silence will be held to remember Dr. McCue. At halftime Dr. McCue will be recognized for his service to the UVa athletics program by being enshrined as a Virginia Legend. A plaque honoring him will be displayed on Legends’ Walk at the north end of Scott Stadium.

McCue joins former Virginia football head coaches Art Guepe and George Welsh as the only non-football players enshrined as Virginia Legends.

“Simply stated, Frank McCue was a difference maker and a legend,” said Virginia director of athletics Craig Littlepage. “He positively impacted generations of student-athletes at all levels of sport. In addition, he contributed to the health and welfare of everyday citizens around the Commonwealth and the nation. Inducting Dr. Frank McCue onto our Legends' Walk is a no-brainer.”

The Cavalier football team will honor Dr. McCue this season with a helmet sticker that says “Doc.” The Virginia coaching staff and sideline support staff will have the word “Doc” embroidered on the left sleeve of their game day polo shirts.

“Doc McCue was a true legend in every sense of the word,” said Virginia football coach Mike London. “You hear story after story about his care and concern for hundreds of athletes and patients from all over. He treated me, my brother Gary and my brother Paul when we were all playing college football. He was the best of the best. Our team is very honored to pay tribute to Dr. McCue this season.”

Dr. McCue headed up the sports medicine program for the University of Virginia athletics department for 41 years. He served as a doctor and medical assistant for the UVa athletics program from 1961 to 2003. After McCue retired in 2003, he was named Professor Emeritus of Orthopedics at the University of Virginia's hospital.

He later became the first inductee to the Order of the Crossed Sabres, which is noted as the Virginia Football Alumni Club's highest honor. The McCue Center, Virginia's primary athletics support building, was dedicated in 1991 and named in his honor. Dr. McCue passed away on July 8.
