Chavira, Cavs Hand VCU First Loss of Season

Entering Tuesday night's game in Richmond, Virginia junior Cameron Chavira had never scored a goal in his college career -- and VCU hadn't lost a game all season.

But that all changed when Marcus Douglas found a wide open Chavira in front of the Rams' net, two minutes into double overtime with the game still scoreless.

Chavira's goal gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 win over VCU in front of a record crowd of 2,242 fans at Sports Backers Stadium. Virginia improved to 5-3-1 with the win, while the Rams fell to 4-1-2.

“I think we’re making progress,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We tied in our last overtime game and this one we one against a very good VCU team which was rested. It was on the road with their biggest crowd in stadium history. It was a very good performance in terms of gutting it out. We’re tired and banged up, and we found a way to get one chance in overtime, and we finished it.”

Virginia goalkeeper Spencer LaCivita was credited with seven saves on the night, one shy of his career high. VCU out-shot the Cavaliers 19-15.
