Clemson Snaps UVa's Winning Streak

The UVa women's tennis team had their six-match winning streak ended with a 4-3 loss at Clemson Sunday afternoon.

The Cavaliers fall to 14-8 overall and 7-2 in the ACC with the loss, while the Tigers improve to 12-6, 7-2 ACC.

Virginia earned the doubles point and senior Hana Tomljanovic and junior Caryssa Peretz recorded singles wins in the loss.

In doubles, freshman Julia Elbaba and Tomljanovic beat Liz Jeukeng and Romy Koelzer 8-3 at No. 2. Clemson’s Yana Koroleva and Beatrice Gumulya defeated senior Erin Vierra and freshman Stephanie Nauta 8-3 at No. 1, but senior Maria Fuccillo and junior Li Xi clinched the point for UVa with an 8-5 win over Tristen Dewar and Ani Miao at No. 3.

Clemson grabbed a 3-1 lead and control of the match after consecutive singles victories from Gumulya, Koelzer and Koroleva. Gumulya beat Xi 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, Koelzer defeated Vierra 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 and No. 17 Koroleva beat No. 11 Elbaba 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1.

Tomljanovic cut the Clemson lead to 3-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Miao at No. 4, but No. 24 Jeukeng ousted No. 66 Nauta 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 to clinch the win.

Peretz closed the scoring with a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 win over Dewar at No. 6.

The Cavaliers host Florida State and Miami on Saturday-Sunday, April 20-21 at Snyder Tennis Center.
