Cold Shooting Dooms 'Hoos in Loss to Wisconsin

It took the Virginia men's basketball team close to nine minutes to hit its first field goal of the second half of Wednesday's game against Wisconsin. And by that point, the damage had been done.

Eighth-ranked Wisconsin used the Cavaliers' dry spell to pull away early in the second half, en route to a 48-38 win at John Paul Jones Arena. The loss snapped Virginia's six-game winning streak this season, and the program's three-game winning streak in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

The win was No. 300 at Wisconsin for Badgers coach Bo Ryan. Wisconsin improved to 9-0 with the win, while the Cavaliers slipped to 7-2.

UVa shot just 23.4 percent from the floor for the game, including 1-of-11 (9.1 percent) from behind the three-point line. No one on the Cavaliers scored in double figures, with freshman London Perrantes leading the team with eight points.

Leading scorer Joe Harris -- who entered the game averaging 12.4 points on 60.3 percent shooting -- shot 1-of-10 from the floor for Virginia, and finished with just two points.

Virginia's 38 points were the program's lowest total under head coach Tony Bennett, and the 23.4 percent shooting percentage was the fourth-worst performance in program history.

Wisconsin led by five points at halftime, then opened the second half on a 9-1 run before Mike Tobey hit UVa's first field goal of the half, with 11:18 to play. The Cavaliers missed their first seven shot attempts after halftime.

The Badgers didn't shoot much better than UVa from the floor, hitting just 28.8 percent of their shots. With 11 points, Josh Gasser was the only player on either team to score in double figures.
