Former Virginia cornerback Ras-I Dowling's injury-plagued time with the New England Patriots is over.
The Patriots announced on Wednesday that the team had released Dowling to free up a roster spot for linebacker Ja'Gared Davis.
Dowling appeared in nine games in two seasons with the Patriots, recording 10 tackles but no interceptions. Dowling was the first pick in Round 2 of the 2011 NFL Draft by New England.
Both of Dowling's seasons in New England ended on injured reserve. He played just two games as a rookie because of a hip injury, while a thigh injury ended his 2012 season after seven games.
