Former Virginia quarterback Ross Metheny is listed as the backup quarterback for South Alabama's opening game this weekend against Texas-San Antonio.
Metheny transferred to South Alabama after three seasons at Virginia. After redshirting in 2009, the left-handed quarterback played in five games in 2010 and two last season. He completed 15-of-19 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns in his Virginia career.
Metheny is eligible to play this season because he completed his undergraduate degree before leaving Virginia. He arrived in Mobile in July to compete with CJ Bennett, the Jaguars' returning starter from last season.
The Jaguars' opening game against Texas-San Antonio was originally scheduled for Thursday night, but was rescheduled for Saturday because of Hurricane Isaac.
