The Falcon Club honored two of the top local spring sport student-athletes at a banquet Wednesday night at the Elks Club in Albemarle County.
Albemarle senior runner Savannah Maxwell and Monticello senior pitcher Sean Byrnes were recognized for their efforts on the field, in the classroom and in the community.
Maxwell took home the Skip Kinnear Scholarship, given to the area's top runner who excels athletically and academically. Maxwell is a key contributor to the Carson Raymond Foundation and plans to attend UVa in the fall.
"It is awesome to be honored as a well-rounded person as well just for character and athletics and academics," Maxwell said. "It makes me feel like what I'm doing is good and I hope that I can carry that onto UVa and continue to be a well-rounded person."
Byrnes received the Hugh Bingler Scholarship. The Monticello pitcher was a first-team All-Jefferson District selection and will pitch for the Elon Phoenix next season.
"Well I think it was great because it wasn't solely on baseball it was also about grades and citizenship and I've really strived to have great grades and I think that helps," Byrnes said "It obviously paid off tonight receiving this award."
