Fluvanna Lacrosse Enjoys First Taste of Victory

The 2012 season was a learning experience for the Fluvanna County boys and girls lacrosse programs as each team went winless during the year.

A new season has brought new hope, however, after both teams scored the first victories in program history Tuesday night.

The boys beat Liberty-Bealeton 9-8 at home while the girls also beat Liberty-Bealton, 13-12, on the road.

Matt Taylor was the Fluco boys JV coach last season and is the head man this year. He's seen the hard work the players have put in and was pleased to see them finally rewarded for their effort.

"It's very rewarding. They've been trying really hard for long periods of time. It's exciting to see one win but I'll be even more excited to see a lot more wins," Taylor said Thursday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Josh Carmack shared Taylor's enthusiasm, but also realizes the young Flucos still have work to do.

"It was great, we all rushed onto the field afterward. We were all excited in the locker room. But there are still a lot of things we need to improve on to keep the victories up."

"Now that we know what it feels like we want more. We're just hungry for another win. So we just keep that as our motivation."

The Fluco girls are also hungry for more after their first win. The team was on the practice field Thursday was still buzzing about Tuesday's win.

"Oh it was incredibly exciting," Senior Megan Graham said. "We had a few chances last year so it was great that we were able to come out in the first game and get what we had been wanting all last season."

Fellow Senior Hannah Lascano shared in Graham's excitement.

"I checked the scoreboard and I'm like wait, are we winning? What's happening? It was kind of a shock. I couldn't really wind down after that game. I was hyper, I was crazy the entire way home."

"Anytime you start a season you'd like to start with a win to get that momentum going but to not only start the season with a win but get the first in school history is double momentum," Head Coach Jenny Payne explained.

The Flucos were involved in many close games last year that didn't go their way. but Tuesday night changed that.

"Nice turn of events actually," Loscano said. "We finally figured out a system that works and we've got people in the right places on the field."

Now, Payne says, the goal for the Flucos is to not be content with just one victory, but to keep improving to one day be able to challenge Jefferson District heavyweights like Western Albemarle.

"You have to pop the bubble and say 'yes that was a great win' but we've still got quite a few strides to get to that next level."

"We don't want to settle," Graham added. "We know we want to achieve a lot more."
