Former Cavaliers Schaub and Ferguson Honored

Before the NFL season gets underway, former Virginia Cavaliers and current NFL players Matt Schaub and D'Brickashaw Ferguson returned to Charlottesville to be honored at Virginia's season opener. The former Hoos had their jerseys retired at halftime of Virgina's game against Richmond.

Schaub, now the Houston Texans quarterback, was the Offensive and Player of the year in 2002. He finished his career at UVa with 22 school records, including those for passing yards, passing touchdowns, and completions.

"It's special, some great times have been had on this campus and in this stadium," Schaub said of returning to UVa on game day. "It's been a few years since I've been back, and it's going to be exciting to watch the game. It's a little different perspective than I'm used to, but it'll be fun."

Ferguson, now an offensive lineman for the New York Jets, was named a first-team All-American as a senior in 2005. He started all 49 games he played in for Virginia, which is the school record for an offensive lineman.

Before the game, Ferguson talked about his emotions on returning to Charlottesville to be honored. "I'm speechless," he said. "I'm just happy I'm here with friends, family, and former players. We're having a good time."

Steelers tight end Heath Miller will also have his jersey retired this year. The three players will be honored with plaques on Legends' Walk in the north end of the Stadium. Miller will have his jersey retired at halftime of Virginia's game against Maryland on October 13.

Also recognized Saturday was the late Dr. Frank C. McCue III, who passed away in July. McCue served as the doctor to Virginia sports teams for more than 40 years. McCue's wife Nancy accepted the honor on his behalf. He is one of three non-football players to be honored on Legends' Walk.
