Fortin, Cavaliers Spend Halloween with Community

There were Toy Story characters, squirrels and penguins.

And those were just the football players.

Several members of the Virginia football team gathered on the Lawn Thursday to hand out candy to hundreds of tiny trick-or-treaters and collect clothes for the Salvation Army.

The idea was the brainchild of junior long snapper Matt Fortin, who resides on the Lawn.

Fortin, dressed as Woody the Cowboy from Toy Story was joined in disguise by fellow Wahoos Pablo Alvarez (Buzz Lightyear), E.J. Scott (squirrel) and Jake McGee (penguin).

Several other players, including David Watford, Jake Snyder, Darius Jennings and David Dean were sans-costume but still got in the spirit by mingling with the children and handing out candy.

The players also held a clothes drive to help support the local Salvation Army.

"We figured there'd be a lot of people here for trick-or-treating on the Lawn and we always wanted to do something to give back to the community so we figured a clothing drive would be great and the amount of people here for trick-or-treating on the Lawn would be a great way to get people involved," Fortin explained.

"It's great for people in the community to see football players off the field and kind of get to know us as just individual people. We're student athletes so it's great for the community to see us interact with kids and we love it. I think these kids look up to us so I think it's great to have them out and talk to us."
