A year ago Brandon Waddell was playing high school baseball in Houston. Now he's getting ready to take the hill for Virginia, when the Cavaliers face East Carolina on Friday.
Waddell, a freshman left-hander, has been named the Cavaliers' opening day starter for Friday's game. And head coach Brian O'Connor says the lefty has already earned his confidence.
"As long as he's giving us a chance to win he's going to be out there," O'Connor said Tuesday. "He's conditioned and he's ready to throw 90 pitches. That's where he was at in his last outing, and so provided he's still giving us an opportunity to win that ballgame, we'll continue to run him out there."
"He's going to be absolutely fine," said sophomore catcher Nate Irving. "I was texting with him last night as we were going over some film of ECU, and he's more than prepared for it. He's got a great mindset on the mound, he can attack the hitters, and I think he's more than prepared for it."
O'Connor said Waddell would start on Friday, followed by senior lefty Scott Silverstein on Saturday, and sophomore right-hander Nick Howard on Sunday. Howard will be the team's opening day third baseman on Friday.
