The 2012 Virginia football schedule includes the first Thursday night game at Scott Stadium in six years.
The ACC released full schedules for its teams on Monday afternoon. The Cavaliers will open with back-to-back games at home against Richmond (September 1) and Penn State (September 8), and end the season on November 24 with a trip to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech.
Virginia will have extra time to prepare for the Hokies this season. The previous game on the schedule is a Thursday night game at home against North Carolina, on November 15. It will be the first Thursday night game at Scott Stadium since UVa shut out the Tar Heels 23-0 during the 2006 season.
Five days before the UNC game, the Cavaliers will host Miami. UVa snapped a seven-game ACC road losing streak by beating the Hurricanes 28-21 in Sun Life Stadium. That was last year's Thursday night game in front of a prime-time national television audience. Virginia also won Miami's last visit to Scott Stadium, a 24-19 upset of the nationally-ranked Hurricanes in 2010.
The Cavaliers open ACC play with a September 15 trip to Georgia Tech. Virginia upset the then-unbeaten Yellow Jackets 24-21 in Charlottesville last October.
Virginia's open date comes on October 27, sandwiched between a visit by Wake Forest and a trip to NC State.
Virginia is coming off an 8-5 season in 2011 that ended with a trip to the Chick-fil-A Bowl, the team's first postseason appearance in four years. The Cavaliers were in contention for the ACC Coastal Division title until a 38-0 loss at home to Virginia Tech in the regular season finale.
