He was regarded as the top prep quarterback in the country coming out of Fork Union Military Academy last season. And Christian Hackenberg lived up to that hype, earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors on Tuesday.
Hackenberg started all 12 games for Penn State as a true freshman this season, leading the Nittany Lions to a 7-5 record. He broke 10 of the program's freshman passing records, and tied the school record with four 300-yard passing games.
Hackenberg's 231 completions and 20 touchdown passes were both second among Big Ten quarterbacks during the regular season, while his 2,955 passing yards were third in the league. He earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors five times, including each of the past two weeks.
