For almost a decade, Jalen Harrison and Quane Washington have lined up next to each other on the football field. On Friday night at St. Anne's-Belfield, they will line up across from each other for the first time, on opposite sides of one of the most heated rivalries in Central Virginia.
"Everybody knows when it's time to play Covenant versus STAB there's no friends," Washington says of his old friend Harrison. "He's an enemy."
A year ago, Washington and Harrison weren't enemies or rivals, they were teammates at Fluvanna. "I've known Quane all my life, I've known him since I was about six-years-old," Harrison explains.
In the summer, Washington transferred to Covenant and Harrison to STAB, and both have become playmakers on their new teams. Now, the two old friends are preparing to face each other, when STAB and Covenant meet on Friday.
"It's going to be pretty interesting, I know he's a good competitor, so am I, so we'll just see," said Washington. "I'll probably be going up against him too, so it'll be a pretty fun matchup."
"It might be a little weird, but I think it'll be fun for both of us to come out and compete against each other," adds Harrison. "I know we're going to give it all, so it'll be a great challenge."
The two former teammates still stay in touch even though they're at different schools. They say they talk to each other after every game, but this week the two might get a chance to do some talking during the game.
"Not much trash talking, just a little bit of trash talking to him," said Harrison. "I might talk to him a little bit about it and see how he feels, but I'm ready to play against him, and I know his ready to play against me."
