Hoos Carrying Momentum into Cavalier Classic

It's been an up and down season for the Virginia women's basketball team, but the Wahoos may be on the upswing once again.

Fresh off a 29-point win over Florida Gulf Coast prior to the holiday break, the Cavaliers host the Cavalier Classic at John Paul Jones Arena this weekend.

Virginia will play Coppin State in one matchup while Alabama and Princeton lock horns in the other, with the winner meeting Sunday.

Virginia has won its home tournament the last nine seasons and look forward to defending their title.

"I've played in this tournament and every year I've been here we've always won so it's great to defend the home court," senior guard Lexi Gerson said.

"I mean you set yourself up for that. We've set ourselves up for the last double home game we have here," head coach Joanne Boyle added. "We've run it for a couple years now. It's the time where football season is over, fans start coming out for basketball season, it's a great kickoff to our season. So we want to deliver, especially on our home court."

The Cavaliers carry a great deal of momentum into the Tournament thanks to the last win over Florida Gulf Coast. The Hoos hit nine three-pointers in the contest and are using that game to propel them forward.

"I mean you're always looking for a game in the season that can give you confidence and momentum and going into the break, that was great," Boyle said. "But now we have to prove that we had a 4-5 day break, we can come back, we can put a tournament together of back-to-back games and take that confidence level into ACC play."
