'Hoos Fall in ACC Opener to Pitt

The Virginia women's basketball team fell 79-75 to Pittsburgh in the Cavaliers' ACC opener Sunday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena.

"No matter what we were doing I thought we were always a step slow, we weren't moving on the flight of the ball," said head coach Joanne Boyle. "Normally we can get to the corners pretty well. But a team shoots 61-percent on us in the second half -- you're not going to win a lot of games in the ACC letting teams shoot like that."

Senior guard Kelsey Wolfe and sophomore guard Faith Randolph each scored 21 points for the Cavaliers. Wolfe scored 10 points at the free throw line, going 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. Randolph finished 7-of-10 from the field and added five rebounds and two steals.

The Panthers made 10-of-21 three-point attempts, going 5-of-9 in the second half. Loliya Briggs went 4-of-7 from three-point range, scoring 18 points overall while Ashlee Anderson was 3-of-3 from long range, scoring 11 points with three assists.

"We just have to do better defensively," Wolfe said after the loss. "If we come down and hit a shot on offense, we can't let them hit a three or get an easy bucket. We just have to be better than that."

With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 7-7 on the season and 0-1 in the ACC, while Pitt improves to 9-7 and 1-1 in the conference. Next up, UVa will face Virginia Tech on the road on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
