'Hoos Open with Loss at Mason

The Virginia men's basketball team has opened the season with a loss for the first time in 15 years.

Bryon Allen's three-pointer with a minute to play broke a 57-57 tie, putting George Mason in front for good Friday night. The Patriots went on to beat Virginia 63-59.

Virginia hadn't lost a season opener since Richmond beat the Cavaliers 83-79 in double overtime on November 16, 1997 -- a streak of 14 straight opening wins.

As expected, Tony Bennett had three freshmen in the starting lineup on Friday night -- forward Mike Tobey, and guards Justin Anderson and Taylor Barnette. The trio combined for 14 points on 5-of-17 shooting.

Junior Joe Harris led the Cavaliers with a game-high 19 points, including four three-pointers. Harris also had a team-high eight rebounds.

Sherrod Wright scored 15 for the Patriots, who beat Virginia for the first time in program history.
