'Hoos Outslug JMU, Complete Perfect Homestand

A five-run first inning wasn't enough, so the Virginia baseball team added a four-run fourth inning, then five more in the eighth.

The Cavaliers also scored a pair of runs in the sixth, en route to a 16-8 win over James Madison Wednesday night at Davenport Field. The win completed a 6-0 homestand for Virginia, who travels to Virginia Tech for a three-game ACC series this weekend.

Every hitter in Virginia's starting lineup had at least one hit Wednesday night, led by sophomore Brandon Downes. He had a three-hit night, including a solo homer, a triple, and three RBI. Senior Reed Gragnani had a pair of hits a drove in four runs, while sophomore Mike Papi drove in two and scored three times.

As a team, Virginia matched a season high with 16 hits on the night.

Junior Austin Young (5-0) got the win in relief after surrendering two hits and an unearned run in 2 1/3 innings of work. Kyle Crockett shut out the Dukes for the final two innings to record his 10th save of the season.
