The Virginia volleyball team beat Columbia and William & Mary on Saturday at Memorial Gym to win the Cavalier Classic and move to 7-5 on the season.
“I’m pleased that we were able to get three wins this weekend,” UVa head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “We grinded out the wins again today like we did last night. We were a little banged up from the preseason tournaments and now we can get healthy as we head into the fun part of the season, the ACC schedule.”
Senior Emily Rottman, who was named the Cavalier Classic Most Valuable Player, recorded 24 digs on the day.
“She is the glue for our team right now,” Hohenshelt said. “She was fantastic all weekend and takes a lot of pressure off of her teammates, especially the freshmen.”
In the first match, the Cavaliers had four players with double-digit kills and went on to win 25-23, 25-22, 24-26 and 25-19 over Columbia. Junior Tori Janowski led the way with 18 kills. Senior Mallory Woolridge and freshman Haley Kole each had 12 kills, while fellow freshman Jasmine Burton added 10. Kole and Woolridge were also named to the Cavalier Classic All-Tournament Team along with Rottman.
Against William & Mary, the Cavaliers missed seven serves in the first set, as the Tribe won the frame, 26-24. In the second set, the Cavaliers used a 7-0 run off of the serve of junior Abbey Welborn to earn the lead and held on for a 25-22 win.
Virginia did not record a hitting error in the third set en route to a 25-18 win, while in the fourth, the Cavaliers hit .324 while holding the Tribe to a .065 hitting percentage in a 25-21 triumph.
Kole and Janowski each had 16 kills, while Burton added 15. Fuller tallied a double-double with 47 assists and 11 digs, while Rottman had a match-high 24 digs.
Next up, the Cavaliers open up ACC play at Duke on Friday, then face Wake Forest on Saturday.
