Howard Ties ACC Mark in UVa Win

Nick Howard has put his name alongside some of the top relief pitchers in Virginia baseball history with his performance out of the bullpen this season.

Howard tied the ACC record with his 18th save of the season Friday night, recording the final four outs of UVa's 3-2 win against North Carolina at the ACC Tournament in Greensboro. Howard joins former UVa pitchers Kevin Arico (2010) and Branden Kline (2011) as Cavaliers to hit the 18-save mark in a season.

UVa improved to 1-1 in Greensboro with the win, but the Wahoos took the field Friday already having been eliminated from contention for Sunday's title game. Maryland's win over Florida State Friday afternoon eliminated the Cavaliers, and UVa's win Friday night clinched the Terrapins' first-ever ACC championship game appearance.

Whit Mayberry got the win out of the bullpen for UVa, despite giving up a game-tying two-run homer to Wood Myers in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cavaliers moved back in front in the eighth when Derek Fisher singled off Myers' glove at second base, allowing Joe McCarthy to score from second.

The Cavaliers wrap up pool play in Greensboro at 7 p.m. Saturday against Florida State.
