Hultzen Named Opening Night Starter at Triple-A

A couple of former Virginia pitchers will front the starting rotatation of the Seattle Mariners' Triple-A team at Tacoma as minor league season opens up this week.

Lefty Danny Hultzen will be the Tacoma Rainiers' opening night starter on Thursday at Fresno. Another former Cavalier, righty Andrew Carraway, will be the Rainiers' No. 2 starter.

Hultzen and Carraway are among a half dozen Virginia alums in the Mariners' minor league system this season. Catcher John Hicks and infielder Steven Proscia will start the year at Double-A Jackson; shortstop Chris Taylor and second baseman Keith Werman will start at the Single-A level.

Right-handed pitcher Branden Kline was the first Virginia player taken in last year's draft. The second round pick will begin his first full minor league season with the Orioles' Single-A team at Delmarva.

A total of 28 former Virginia players open the 2013 season on minor league rosters, trying to join the five former Cavaliers already in the big leagues. Click here for the full list of former Cavaliers playing pro baseball.
