Jenkins Advances at US Open

Former Virginia tennis star Jarmere Jenkins is moving on at his first-ever appearance at the US Open.

On Tuesday, Jenkins advanced to the second round of qualifying by defeating Austria's Gerald Melzer 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Jenkins will now face Julian Reister of Germany in Round 2.

"Finally got my first singles win at the US Open. So hungry and motivated for another one," Jenkins wrote on Twitter Tuesday night.

Reister advanced with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 win over fellow German Tim Puetz in the first round of qualifying.

Jenkins ended his senior season at UVa ranked No. 1 in the ITA singles rankings, and finished as the NCAA singles runner-up. He and Mac Styslinger teamed up to win the doubles national championship, and Jenkins was also a member of UVa's first-ever NCAA title-winning team.

Last month, Jenkins was named the 2013 ACC male athlete of the year, becoming just the fifth UVa athlete all-time to earn that award.
