Virginia sophomore pitcher Nathan Kirby has been named one of 21 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, which is given annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country.
Kirby has an 8-1 record this season along with a 1.48 ERA. He leads the team with 93 strikeouts this season. On April 4, Kirby threw a no-hitter at Pittsburgh, the first for UVa since 2011. He finished the game with 18 strikeouts, which is one off the school and ACC single-game record.
The Golden Spikes Award finalists will be announced on Tuesday, June 3.
Kirby was recently named the ACC Co-Pitcher of the year for the 2014 season. He and the Cavaliers will be back in action Friday at 2 p.m. at Davenport when they begin NCAA Regional play against Bucknell.
