Local Track Athletes Set Personal Bests at 50th Annual Dogwood Classic

Some of the Commonwealth's top high school track and field athletes were in Charlottesville Saturday for the 50th Annual Dogwood Classic held at UVa's Lannigan Field.

Forty-nine schools competed in the event on a picture-perfect day at Lannigan and a number of local athletes set personal bests during the day.

Louisa County senior Raeshawn Bishop won the boys long jump title with a personal best mark of 22 feet, 11 inches. Not bad for someone who hadn't competed in nine weeks thanks to a pulled hamstring.

"It felt great, actually, because I was thinking like what if I don't get better, what if I plataeu after that, after my injury, but it felt great," Bishop said.

Charlottesville senior Taylor Watkins also made a Dogwood return after missing two weeks with an injury. The reigning "AA" state champ in the 400 finished second in today's race, which she says felt like her first all over again.

"I was tired actually. I was very tired," Watkins explained. "It kind of felt like a first meet again. I was really nervous, but I just wanted to do well."

The boys mile was considered by many track insiders to be the race to watch today. Albemarle senior Ryan Thomas had the top qualifying time in a loaded field but finished fifth. The Columbia-bound Thomas says today's result provides him with good incentive going forward.

"Yeah it definitely gives me more motivation after seeing these guys race so well and knowing I'm just as good as they are and that I should be able to run just as fast as they are," Thomas said.

The fastest boy on the track today was Woodberry Forest sophomore Michael Davenport. The Tiger burned up the hundred-meter dash, finishing in a first-place and personal-best 10.74. He then doubled-up, winning the 200 meters as well.

"For there to be so many teams and to come out on top makes you feel amazing," Davenport said. "A little bit like unstoppable. It just made me feel more stronger than I thought I would."

Other notable local winners include Fork Union's Peter Lomong (800 meters), Hannah Meador (girls pole vault) and Western Albemarle's Lydia Garner (girls high jump).
