London in No Rush to Pick Cavaliers' QB

Last season, Mike London announced Virginia's starting quarterback for the Cavaliers' opener against William & Mary when he revealed the team's depth chart five days before the game.

On Tuesday, London indicated that he hasn't felt compelled to name this year's starter any sooner.

"The timetable is nothing that we're overly concerned about; trying to name a guy, who the starter is right now," London told reporters before Tuesday afternoon's practice.

London announced in July that junior Michael Rocco -- who started all 13 games for Virginia after winning a four-way competition for the job in 2011 -- would enter this year's camp as the starter. Rocco has been competing with a pair of sophomores, David Watford and Alabama transfer Phillip Sims.

Rocco's 2,671 passing yards last season were the most by a first-year starting quarterback in Virginia history. He led the Cavaliers to eight wins and a berth in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, where he threw for a career-high 312 yards.

In an interview last week, Rocco said that game experience should give him an edge in the quarterback competition.

"I've been there before, I feel like," he said. "I've started 13 games, we've had our ups and downs but we've come out on top in a bunch of tough situations. Actually being there, and being the leader of the team in tough situations, really makes you feel comfortable and have a confidence about you."

London said Tuesday that all three quarterbacks have looked good this summer. And with more than a week before the season kicks off, he's inclined to let the competition continue.

"We'll go in, as long as it takes to come out of this thing with a fair and objective evaluation," he said, "so it's best for the team and it's best for each one of those individuals."
