Virginia's fall football camp is just weeks away, and once again the Cavaliers will start camp without a clear starting camp. But this year, according to head coach Mike London, the questions won't linger for much longer.
"It'll be very very soon going into August camp," London said of his timeline for naming a starter.
"I know people are like, 'well, is it David?' David finished up the spring listed at number one. He's got more experience right now. But Greyson Lambert is a guy that as I said, you know we're not going to hand anything to anybody. You always have to compete."
Redshirt sophomore David Watford is the Cavaliers' only quarterback with playing experience. As a freshman in 2011, he split time with Michael Rocco, playing in 10 games before redshirting last year.
"The maturity level of how he handled playing as a freshman and then redshirting was tremendous," London says of Watford. "He became a selfless player, he became a student of the game.
"Skill level wise, I think David's got great feet, he's got a great arm, so I think he's a dual threat type of guy."
Redshirt freshman Greyson Lambert will compete with Watford for the starting job. Lambert threw for two touchdowns and 248 yards in the 'Hoos spring game this year.
London describes Lambert as "smart, intelligent, probably more of a drop back, strong arm guy, and very capable."
Watford and Lambert split time in spring practice with Phillip Sims, who is no longer at UVa after being ruled ineligible. London says his two quarterbacks, who were listed at numbers one and two on the post-spring depth chart, are ready to step up this season.
"We have a team that has the mindset of a "next man up" mentality. There are certain expectations we have on the team as far as in the classroom, off the field, obviously in the weight room, and on the field. So our guys have conditioned themselves with the fact that we want to do what's best for the team."
