Virginia senior pitcher Whit Mayberry was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 21st round of the 2014 MLB Draft as the 640th overall pick. Teammate and junior catcher Nate Irving was also drafted Saturday. Irving was taken in the 34th round at No. 1020 overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Mayberry has appeared in 28 games with one start in the 2014 season. The Cavalier senior has a 6-1 record and 1.59 ERA this season and an 18-3 record with a 2.99 ERA in his UVa career.
Irving is batting .236 this season in 50 games and was selected to the All-ACC third-team last month. He is a .268 career batter in 159 games.
Mayberry and Irving are the seventh and eighth Cavaliers taken in the 2014 MLB Draft. Nick Howard, Derek Fisher, and Mike Papi were all drafted on the first day, while Brandon Downes, Branden Cogswell, and Artie Lewicki were picked on day two.
