McCarthy Named Baseball America Freshman All-American

Outfielder Joe McCarthy continues to get recognized for his outstanding first season in a Virginia uniform.

The latest honor came Monday from Baseball America, which included McCarthy on its Freshman All-America Team. McCarthy was one of five ACC players selected to the first team.

McCarthy was the conference's rookie of the year in 2013 after hitting .336 with four homers and 51 RBI as the Cavaliers' everyday right fielder. He also tied the school record with 54 walks, and his batting average was the highest for a first-year UVa player since Bill Narleski hit .366 in 1984.

McCarthy is the first UVa rookie to be named a freshman All-American by Baseball America since Danny Hultzen in 2009, and the fifth player in program history to earn the honor. Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA also included the left-handed hitter on their Freshman All-America teams.
