Taylor Sandidge had trouble controlling her emotions while addressing her basketball teammates at the Miller School on Monday afternoon.
"I've been with some of these girls for three years; some two. And some, this is their first year being with me. And they're like sisters to me," Sandidge said after a brief ceremony celebrating her signing with Virginia-Wise. "Yeah, we have our ups and downs. But we're a team at the end of the day, and being a team is being a family."
"So leaving them behind, it's bittersweet."
Sandidge leaves Miller after a decorated three-year career with the Mavericks. She was an all-state selection all three seasons after transferring from Waynesboro, and leaves the Mavericks with more than 1,000 career points and the program's all-time steals record.
As a senior, Sandidge's 11.7 points-per-game, 3.8 assists-per-game, and 73 steals all led the team.
Now she says joining the Cavaliers is a dream come true.
"It's been my goal since I was little. I've known that when I went to college, I wanted to play," Sandidge said. "Regardless of if I didn't play that much, I knew that was one thing I wanted to do. I had to make my family proud, other than myself."
