When practice officially starts Friday for the Virginia men's basketball team, Akil Mitchell will be present -- and most importantly to Wahoo fans -- healthy.
The senior forward is recovering from a broken bone in his right hand suffered over the summer.
"Yeah, I'm 100%," Mitchell said Wednesday. "I've been cleared for a few weeks now, been working out. The injury was pretty minor, it looks a lot worse than it actually is but I feel good, feel great and I'm ready to go."
The injury happened on the last day of Mitchell's stay at the Lebron James Skill Academy. Prior to that, Mitchell had also impressed basketball people at the Nike Big Man Camp.
A third-team All-ACC selection this past season, Mitchell used his time off to rest and work on improving his game.
"It was a blessing in disguise," he explained. "It allowed me to get off my feet for a while, get some rest which I definitely needed. And an opportunity to start to perfect my left hand, which I also really needed so it was a blessing in disguise."
