Monticello Teammates Headed to William and Mary

One of the Virginia's CAA football programs got the quarterback it was looking for in Monticello's Jhalil Mosley. But it wasn't the program Mosley originally committed to.

On Wednesday, Mosley signed his National Letter of Intent to play at William & Mary next season, spurning James Madison in the process. Mosley had been publicly committed to the Dukes since last summer.

"I'm not going to lie. The coaching staff, and the changes down at JMU, that had something to do with it," Mosley explained. "The coaches at William & Mary, they were just there on a day-to-day basis. I talked to them everyday, whether that was on the phone, Facebook. I just grew a big relationship with them."

JMU dismissed offensive coordinator Jeff Durden after the 2012 season, while offensive assistant Latrell Scott -- another key figure in Mosley's recruitment -- left to take the head coaching job at Division-II Virginia State.

Those changed helped re-open the door for the Tribe, who added a quarterback who threw for 4,364 career yards and 48 touchdowns at Monticello, while running for 1,648 yards and 21 scores.

"They do basically what we do here. Pro-style; gun-style," Mosley said of the William and Mary offense. "They said they're going to incorporate much more diverse stuff like read, dive option. Stuff like that. Different packages that I can do."

Mosley will be joined at William and Mary by Monticello teammate Sam Marshall. The offensive lineman will join the Tribe as a preferred walk-on next season.

"It's exciting," Marshall said. "I can't wait to play under Jimmye Laycock, and the rest of that coaching staff. And just with all of those other great athletes. I mean, they've got some talent down there, and I'm ready to be part of that."

Marshall said he was attracted to the Tribe by "the whole package" -- and he liked the idea of continuing his career with Mosley.

"They've got an awesome coaching staff, awesome football program, and awesome academics. So I can't wait to get in there and work," Marshall said. "My goal is to be a starter by next year, so I'm going to get in there and work."
