Virginia freshman defensive end Michael Moore doesn't want to make a big deal about who his father is.
"I feel like every other kid," says Moore, the son of former Virginia quarterback Shawn Moore, now the team's tight ends coach. "With him, it's a little bit better, because I've got my dad already here. So it's somebody to talk to."
But for the elder Moore -- a 1990 Virginia graduate who is still second on the school's all-time passing list -- having his son on Grounds is a dream come true.
"It's awesome for me," Shawn Moore says. "I didn't think it would ever be possible. But the fact that he's here, and he's actually getting a chance to play, I'm excited for him."
Moore is pushing for playing time as a true freshman at defensive end this summer. He spent much of the first week of practice running with the second team defense.
Moore, regarded as a four-star prospect by the major recruiting websites, signed with the Cavaliers out of DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland last February. Virginia was one of 17 programs to offer the 6-4, 260-lb. Moore a scholarship.
His father is entering his first season as the team's tight ends coach, after spending the past two years coaching Virginia's wide receivers.
"I wish him the best. I think he's going to be okay," Shawn Moore says. "I try not to interact with him too much on the field, and I think he's kind of made a name for himself already."
