NCAA Tournament Snubs UVa Women

The bubble has burst for the Virginia women's basketball team.

The Cavaliers learned Monday night that they didn't receive an at-large bid in this year's NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers finished the season 22-10 under first-year coach Joanne Boyle, following a 70-58 loss to Maryland in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.

This marks the second consecutive season the Cavaliers have missed the 64-team field.

It was announced late Monday night that Virginia will once again participate in the Women's NIT this season. The Cavaliers will host Howard on Thursday night in the tournament's opening round.

Virginia advanced to the quarterfinals of last year's WNIT, before losing 79-74 to Charlotte at John Paul Jones Arena to finish the season 19-16.

The Cavaliers finished the regular season tied for fifth in the ACC standings. The top four teams made the NCAA field: ACC tournament champion Maryland (two-seed in the Raleigh region); and at-large invites Duke (two-seed in the Fresno region); Miami (three-seed in the Kingston region); and Georgia Tech (four-seed in the Des Moines region).
