Nine-Run Eighth Fuels No. 5 Virginia Past Miami

No. 5 Virginia improved to 24-2 overall and 8-2 in ACC play with a 15-4 domination of Miami Friday at Davenport Stadium.

The Cavaliers cranked out 16 hits in the game, led by Mike Papi, who went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and Brandon Downes also had a pair of hits with five RBIs.

Virginia scored four runs in the third inning thanks to a two-run double by Downes, who later scored on a Papi double.

The Cavs then blew the game open in the eighth, scoring nine runs, highlighted by a Downes three-run home run.

Austin Young picked up the win in relief of starter Brandon Waddell.

Virginia and Miami will resume their series Saturday at 1 p.m.
