North Carolina Stuns Virginia, Wins Coastal in Late Comeback

Virginia was five outs away from winning the second game of the series vs. North Carolina, forcing a de facto playoff for the Coastal Division Saturday.

Improbably, the Tar Heels then reeled off six runs to escape with an 8-5 win and claim the Coastal Division title and the top seed in next week's ACC Tournament. Virginia fell to 44-9 and 21-8 in the ACC.

Virginia led 5-2 and retired the first batter in the eighth. The next eight Tar Heels then reached base on Virginia closer Kyle Crockett, fueled by a Nick Howard error that started the Carolina rally. Two triples and a single later and Crockett was lifted for Josh Sborz.

The Cavaliers did most of their damage in the middle innings. Mike Papi doubled in Nate Irving in the third, Brandon Downes added a solo homer and Kenny Towns an RBI-single in the fourth and Papi added another solo blast in the fifth.
